Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics focuses on correcting issues with your teeth and jaw alignment. It can help you reach your aesthetic goals by giving you the smile you always wanted, but treatments can also improve your oral health.

Your top teeth don’t move because they’re directly attached to the top half of your head, but your lower teeth are attached to your movable jaw bone.

When your teeth and bite don’t line up correctly, or if your teeth are crooked or overlapping, you could be at risk for issues, such as:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Tooth decay
  • Uneven wear on your teeth
  • Gum disease

Dr. Southard assesses your dental condition and recommends if you should have your misalignments corrected with orthodontics.

What conditions does orthodontics correct?

Orthodontics can correct many issues, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Crooked teeth

You might also have a combination of any of these issues, which can usually be corrected with one orthodontic solution. Dr. Southard advises on the best remedy to fix your issues.

What orthodontic solutions can fix my issues?

Dr. Southard first assesses your needs before deciding on the best option for you. Typical options include:

Traditional braces

These involve metal brackets that are applied with an adhesive and connected by a wire that requires tightening by your provider every four to six weeks.

Ceramic braces

These work like traditional braces, but they have transparent or tooth-colored ceramic brackets that attach to the surface of your teeth, using similar colored wires and rubber bands for a more discreet appearance.

Clear aligner therapy

This orthodontic solution involves straightening your teeth and correcting your bite with sets of clear dental trays that are customized to fit your teeth. You change the trays out every two weeks until your teeth reach their final position. Dr. Southard uses Clear Correct®.

During your evaluation and consultation, Dr. Southard talks with you about your options, and together you can both determine the best choice for you. Decisions are based on your aesthetic desires during treatment, plus how quickly you want to see final results.

If you have misalignment problems with your teeth or bite or both, call Southard Dental today for an appointment, or use the online booking tool.
