Bridges Q & A

What are bridges?

Bridges are custom-fitted dental prosthetics that replace one or more of your missing teeth. A bridge is composed of two crowns that have one or two artificial teeth between them.

Dr. Southard places the crowns over your healthy teeth on either side of your missing tooth or teeth, providing a secure anchor that holds your bridge in place. A dental implant can also serve as an anchor for the bridge in place of crowns.

Dr. Southard talks with you about your options, which can be determined by how many teeth are missing and the health of your remaining ones.

How are bridges placed?

The process for getting bridges requires two visits. During your first visit, Dr. Southard gives you a local anesthetic before preparing your teeth, if desired.

He then removes a small amount of your tooth to allow the bridge to attach to them securely without taking up too much space in your mouth.

After your teeth are prepared, he takes an impression of them to send to a lab where they create a custom bridge to fit over your teeth perfectly. The lab also creates false teeth that fill the gap that look just like your original teeth. Dr. Southard puts on a temporary bridge for you to wear until your permanent one comes in.

At your final appointment, Dr. Southard makes sure the bridge fits securely. He might need to make a few adjustments, but once it feels comfortable, he uses dental cement to place it permanently.

What are the benefits of bridges?

Many people choose bridges over dentures or dental implants because they provide a non-invasive treatment, and the process can take far less time than other treatments.

In addition, dental bridges provide benefits, including:

  • Easy to maintain
  • Comfortable when speaking and chewing
  • Helps maintain your facial structure
  • Improves the appearance of your smile
  • Prevents your healthy teeth from shifting
  • Takes the pressure off the rest of your teeth when biting down

During your consultation, Dr. Southard makes sure you’re informed about your options for replacing your missing teeth.
